Convoy of British merchant ships

DescriptionA war effort poster depicting a convoy of British merchant ships sailing into Murmansk, escorted by Soviet fighter planes. The poster was aimed at factory workers who enthusiastically embraced the idea of producing ˜Arms for Russia'. Entire blocks of production output were dedicated to the Soviet war effort. The government produced pro-Russian propaganda in an attempt to ˜steal the thunder of the left' and to ensure that ˜Russia' was supported rather than ˜The Soviet Union'. Support therefore was for a nation rather than communism as a political system. Interestingly, ˜Russia' is used here rather than the USSR or the Soviet Union.
